Italy and Sicily - Architecture

"Boys and Girls in the Piazza - Vernazza, Italy" (20"X16", OIl on Canvas, $650)

This is the one of the two main piazzas in Vernazza. The other one is down by the waterfront and has all the restaurants and cafes. This one is right by the train tracks and is more residential, but there is the little bar that Ernest Hemingway used to drink at, as well as the Trattoria da Sandro seen in the background with the awning. Like everywhere in Vernazza, the buildings are tightly packed and looming. The town is very small, with only one main street. All the rest of the streets go practically vertical up steep steps where they turn off this main one, Via Roma. I took this shot just as I stepped off the train that runs to all the towns of the Cinque Terre region (Five Terraces - Vernazza is the second town). All the towns are built right into the cliffsides and extend right to the edge of the sea, where the town makes most of its living. I think Vernazza is the most beautiful of all the towns, and it remains one of the unknown spots in Italy. If you like small towns and fresh seafood, pasta, and Pinot Grigio wine (which is the regional specialty, along with basil pesto) I recommend it.
This view shows the most natural thing in the world - boys and girls in a little village walking and flirting to pass the time. This being Italy, the boys are practicing their soccer moves in general, but also to impress the girls strolling in their miniskirts. And, like anywhere, all the girls have to is walk by, maybe tossing a greeting their way, to stop the action. Look closely and you'll see two other faces watching the girls from an upstairs window. I love the wooden windows, by the way, with their lower portions that open outward from the bottom. Those windows are absolutely emblematic of Italy and are part of why this scene caught my eye.
