North End, Boston - Prado Fountain

"Early Morning at the Fountain in the Prado - North End" (20"X24", Oil on Canvas, $750)

This is one of my other Prado Fountain paintings, done on site over the course of a few mornings in the summer of 2007. I like the perspective, with the shaded flower bed in the foreground, leading to the dappled sunlight that points the viewer to the fountain itself. The sound of the falling water and the songs of the unseen birds in the trees is supplied by the mind of the viewer when looking at the blue/purple morning shadows and spots of sunlight on the bricks. The bronze memorial plaques are visible along the ivy-capped wall at the background, which also leads the viewer to the fountain. The heat of the day is coming, but not yet here.
I've always loved being out in the early summer morning in the North End (or anywhere, for that matter). The people are mostly still in bed, the light and the temperature is pleasant, the smell of the ocean is carried on the breeze and the trees and flowers are responding to the rising sun. Who wouldn't want to paint something at this time of day? I find it to be another 'golden hour', along with the more popular one in the evening before sunset, that invites creativity while providing the silence and stillness that makes it easier to focus on the artistic task at hand. I like to think that this painting makes the case for that point of view.
