Sailboats in Boston Harbor

"Sailing Class, Raising the Mainsail - Boston Harbor" (16"X20", Oil on Canvas, SOLD)

This picture was sold at a show in Back Bay, before the show even opened! An Irish businessman came in to the gallery early and liked the look of this painting enough to buy it before anyone else could see it. It shows a sailing class at the Boston Sailing Center on a rather windy summer day. The fellow standing on the stern with his hands in his shorts pockets is the cool instructor, I think his name is Norm. The three other guys on the boat are 'learning the ropes', as the old sailing phrase goes. The clouds in the sky and the choppy harbor water, mainly seen in the boats' bobbing and straining against their moorings, lets you know that these students are in for quite a ride once the sails are up and tied fast.
I like painting boats because of their nice lines. Their low, graceful shapes are carefully and beautifully evolved to split and ride the water while their sails strain against the wind to pull them along. I imagine these three students are full members of the Sailing Center by now, with boats of their own, maybe even teaching their sons or daughters 'the ropes'.
