Sailboats in Boston Harbor

"Motoring in at the end of the Day - Boston Harbor" (16"X20", Oil on Canvas, $700)

This is my favorite painting that I've done of the Boston Waterfront, actually the Boston Sailing Center. It's a fairly complex one, showing the last light of a summer's day as the sailboat in the foreground chugs into its slip (NO WAKE) after striking its sails. The pair of sailors on the smaller boat behind them are already at their mooring and watching the larger boat come in as they similarly drop the mainsail. Most of the scene is already in the shadows of the waterfront buildings, while the background still has the sun and the clouds in the distance show the reflected fire of the last rays of the day.
Various other boats in the background are already packed up for the night, while a water taxi weaves between them, on the way to bring someone from out there back to shore.
This was truly enjoyable to paint, with all the reflections and shades of color in the water. The actual subject of the painting is when you feel tired from a day of doing something relaxing, but which nonetheless requires muscular effort and mental focus - it's a good kind of tired.
