Sailboats in Boston Harbor

"Tying up or Casting off - Boston Harbor" (24"X18", Oil on Canvas, $750)

This painting was done in the summer while the Boston Sailing Center was in full-swing. When I showed it for the first time (at the Boston Arts Festival, 2008) someone from the Sailing Center came by and did a double-take. He had recognized the instructor in the painting and it made him stop short. The painting shows a view from the gangway looking back towards the condos (which used to be cold storage warehouses, sail-makers and boat repair facilities back in the days of sail) that line the entire waterfront and each of the wharves. The bright white summer clouds overhead and the sunlight throughout the scene tells us it's midday in Boston Harbor. The light in the water shows the hull of the sailboat below the waterline as the instructor hauls the line. Later in the day he'll be piloting the water taxi in the next slip over to bring other sailors in. All in day's work for this guy.
At later shows, this painting has always made a few people comment that it looks convincing enough to be a photo. I've never seen it quite like that, but I'm happy to hear it.
